Top Ten Ways To Create Cosy Bedrooms

Winter seems to have finally left the building and we are starting to see the beginnings of Spring. There are lots of ways to bring a little bit of sunshine into your bedroom design, but we all know the warmer weather won’t last. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the top 10 ways to keep your bedroom cosy, whatever the weather.

  1. Fabrics – soft furnishings are so important in a bedroom, especially when you want to add an element of comfort. Throws, cushions and rugs are all perfect ways to tie a room together and add texture. Using pastel shades will keep the room on-trend and allow you to get cosy whilst moving away from a more wintery feel.
  2. Lighting – this is a really important element in a bedroom. During the summer months you will get more natural light in your room, but having dimmed mood lighting will add a gloriously cosy glow at night. Alternatively, get a pretty nightstand and make a bedside lamp a bit of a focal point.
  3. Seating – having somewhere you can curl up and read a book is the perfect way to get a cosy feel. Your bedroom should be a place of escape so get a chair big enough to snuggle into, place a throw on it and add a big cushion for an inviting feel you simply can’t refuse.
  4. Minimalism – for a room to be truly cosy and calming it must be free of clutter. Invest in plenty of storage so that your room feels like a haven of tranquillity. Having one or two pictures on the wall adds character to your room, but prevents it from being too claustrophobic. If you don’t have a very big room then place a mirror on one wall to add a sense of space. It will also add light, making your room much more airy.
  5. Comfy bed – it goes without saying that a big, comfy bed is a prerequisite to a “cosy” bedroom. It is the focal point of the room and needs to be right. Soft, fluffy pillows and an over sized duvet will let you feel like you’re drifting off to sleep on a cloud. Canopies above the bed will bring more focus to it and adds personality.
  6. Mismatched – upcycling is very popular and makes for great furniture inspiration. Using old doors as a headboard or a travel chest as a bedside table makes your room less uniform. Different textures, but similar colours will add a real country cosy look to your room. Seeing is believing!
  7. Accessories – candles add a lovely cosy glow to a room and, if scented, can be soothing. Frame photos and place them on your side table or boxed bedhead. Adding personality to your room will add to the cosy comfort factor. Blanket chests are handy for storing away your winter bedding and clothes, but double up as a nice seat which you can place cushions on.
  8. Patterns – generally using patterns will make a room look smaller and cosier so, if your room is quite small anyway, it would be a good idea to use pattern sparingly. If you have a focal wall then use pattern on that and plain colours on the adjacent walls. This will add a certain amount of texture, but not leave you feeling too closed in.
  9. Window dressing – whether it is cascading curtains that keep out the chill or modern shutters, how you dress your windows will determine the cosiness of your room. Warm, lustrous fabrics will obviously make your room instantly cosy, but colourful shutters are also a bold statement. They will shut out the entire world and let you curl up in your cosy wonderland and truly rest. Whatever your style, there is a cosy window choice for all.
  10. Declutter – the key to getting a cosy bedroom is to make sure that everything in there is restful. Remove unnecessary clutter with fitted wardrobes and keep technology to a minimum. Make sure that your bedroom doesn’t double up as an office or you will never feel like you have left work.

As you can see, getting cosy is really easy to do. It is mostly about the finishing touches and choosing the right materials. Get creative and enjoy the rewards.
